Galway punters are gearing up to do battle with bookies again this year with the Cheltenham festival getting under way next week, March 12.

The autumn meeting of the Galway Races begins on Monday for three days, consisting of 21 races, both flat and national hunt races. One of the highlights of the racing festival will be the Ardilaun Hotel Listed Oyster Stakes, which takes place on the first day of the races which is now in its 21st year.

The conclusion of a fifth successful tag rugby summer season at Mullingar Rugby Club will be celebrated with the annual Mad Hatters Tea Party in the clubhouse, on the August bank holiday weekend.

Thursday’s highlight, the Guinness Galway Hurdle, is the richest race of its kind in the land and a total of 74 entries greeted senior handicapper Noel O'Brien who awarded last year’s controversial beaten favourite The Real Article top weight of 11st 10lbs, 5lbs above last year’s hero Moon Dice, with the Edward Harty trained Captain Cee Bee just one pound lower in the ratings.

It may seem that four seasons as we know them have decided to rotate on a daily rather than three monthly basis, but the Galway Racing Festival, no matter what the overhead conditions are, is always guaranteed to deliver a week long episode of that west of Ireland feel good factor that is synonymous with the City Of The Tribes.

Organisers are expecting bumper crowds at this year’s Galway Races, with up to 150,000 people expected to pass through the turnstiles during the festival.
